Preserving Historic Charm with Modern Comforts
Set within a historic Georgian building, Gardiner House retains remarkable architectural details from its days as a convent. Guests can admire stunning stained-glass windows, the original holy water font, the historic donation box, and soaring vaulted ceilings that flood dormitories and common areas with natural light. While honouring its past, the hostel offers contemporary comforts — spacious dorms with comfy bunk beds, private lockers, reading lights, en-suite bathrooms, and a cosy lounge and kitchen area perfect for socialising and preparing meals. Free Wi-Fi throughout makes it easy to stay connected.
A Glimpse Into Dublin’s Past
In the heart of Dublin, Gardiner House stands as a living testament to nearly two centuries of care, education and hospitality. Originally established in 1821 when Archbishop Daniel Murray received a legacy to build schools for Catholic children, the site was entrusted to the Sisters of Charity, who arrived in 1830 led by Mother Catherine Walsh.
Supported by generous Dubliners and Jesuit priests, the convent doors welcomed those in need of food, shelter and comfort. Children played and learned in gardens and hallways, where wooden knobs on the back staircase prevented sliding down. From day one, the convent was a beacon of hope for the poor — providing classes, meals, tending to the sick and inspiring kindness across Dublin.
In 2016, after 186 years of service, the Sisters closed the convent, leaving behind a legacy of hope and hospitality. Today, Gardiner House lives on, echoing that tradition with warmth and character, creating a lively space for all who seek to explore Dublin with a sense of history and community.
